Speaker : Ms Karen Toohey, Acting Commissioner, Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission

Karen is the Acting Commissioner with the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission and took up this appointment in August 2011.

Karen has worked in the human rights sector for the past 15 years and has formal qualifications in marketing, computing science, behavioural science and law.

After a career in marketing and IT in the private sector, Karen joined the Australian Human Rights Commission in Sydney and left her senior executive role there in early 2010 to take up the position as Chief Executive Officer of the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission from January 2010.

The new Equal Opportunity Act 2010 (EOA) came into effect on 1 August this year. This new legislation will affect all Victorian businesses, government, goods and service providers, sport and accommodation providers.

For the first time in Victoria, there will be an onus on these providers to take reasonable and proportionate steps to eliminate discrimination. The new EOA will give the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission a range of tools to address systemic discrimination. This is your chance to hear directly from the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission. The presentation will cover the objectives of the EOA, what is required of business to prepare and implement the new legislation and where to go for further advice and training.
